Annual - Pre-Mating

After breeding animals have been selected for the year, the next step is typically to evaluate them, administer treatments and potentially draft them into groups for special treatment to ensure each animal meets minimum breeding condition by the time of mating. This can be accomplished using the following steps in StockManager:

  1. Setup Group(s) (if applicable) in the system using the Group Settings screen

  2. Analyze current mating Group(s) to monitor the number of animals that do and don't meet mating condition requirements using the Animal Analysis screen

  3. Collect animal information and draft animals using the Configured Events screen

Setup Groups

Setting up Group(s) to assign animals to that require special treatment provides a simple way to collect data and monitor progress of these animals.

The Group Settings screen displayed below shows a few examples of how Pre-Mating Groups can be setup:

  • The Non-ID Group Mixed Age Ewes Conditioning could be setup to track the average metrics and counts of mixed age ewes that require special treatment to get to mating condition

  •  ID Group Mixed Age Cows Conditioning could be setup to collect data and monitor the condition of mixed age cows that require special treatment to get to mating condition but may be managed with other animals or stock classes for feeding

Analyze Mating Animals

The Animal Analysis screen can be used to quickly determine the number of animals with individual records in different mating Groups that do or don't meet mating condition requirements, calculate metrics for them and add them to a Group for special treatment.

You can use filters to identify these animals using the following  steps.

  1. Identify the current mating Group that you want to evaluate using filters

    • Select Animal Type

    • Select status values that represent animals alive and on farm (Added, Birth, Grazed In, Purchased or Recovered)

    • Select other attributes that define the mating Group you would like to evaluate

  2. Use additional filters to identify attributes of animals that do or don't meet mating requirements such as weight and condition score

You can then calculate metrics on this group to help with feed planning, to monitor progress and project future weights. Lastly, you can save animals in the filtered list to a previously defined special treatment Group.

The Animal Analysis screen displayed below shows an example of using filters to identify animals below weight or condition score from a previously defined mating Group along with key metrics.

The screen displayed below shows an example of saving a filtered group of animals to a Group designated for special treatment.

Collect Data and Draft Animals

The Configured Events screen can be used to collect data on animals in mating groups and use this to draft animals into Groups for special treatment.

The screens displayed below show an example of the setup (left) and event (right ) screen for a collecting data and drafting animals based on this.

The screens displayed below show a similar setup for drafting event of non-tagged animals where weight is being auto-populated and condition score is manually selected. After this event is completed, the count of animals, their average weight and condition score will be added to the record of the Non-ID Group selected in Event Setup.

Assign To Group By Draft Direction

The goal of Pre-Mating drafting is to collect data on animals to determine condition and draft them into groups that require different treatment to meet mating condition metrics by mating time. To assist with this, after selecting a draft direction in the event configuration, you can select a Group (optional) - this presents a list of Groups to choose from based on the Animal Type and ID Method selected in the Event Setup

  • Selecting an ID Group will add the Group to the animal record of every animal that is drafted this direction

  • Selecting a Non-ID Group will add the metrics associated with animals drafted this direction to the Non-ID Group record including the following if the data is collected in the event:

    • Condition Score - Average

    • Count - default

    • Scan Result - Average Scan Result & Potential Birth Count

    • Weight - Average Weight
